The Webinar titled "Advancing Sustainability in Critical Minerals Processing in Africa" is organized by the Institution of Chemical Engineers and focuses on the vital role of critical minerals in clean energy and high-tech industries in Africa. The session will be led by Kennedy Kereke, who brings 30 years of extensive experience in the mining sector across several African countries, including Zimbabwe, Botswana, the DRC, Sierra Leone, and Uganda. He has a rich background in process improvement, metallurgical optimization, and plant management, specifically in commodities such as copper, cobalt, nickel, PGMs, gold, chrome, and iron ore.Kennedy Kereke's presentation will delve into Africa's abundant resources of critical minerals such as copper, cobalt, lithium, graphite, and rare earth elements. He will address the pressing sustainability challenges associated with the processing of these minerals, which are crucial for industries like electric vehicle battery production and renewable energy infrastructure. The session will cover key topics, including environmental impacts, regulatory barriers, technological constraints, and the need for investment in green technologies. Additionally, Kereke will highlight opportunities for enhancing sustainability through integrated mining practices and public-private partnerships. One innovative approach discussed will be industrial symbiosis, which effectively utilizes waste materials from mining operations for construction and other applications, promoting resource efficiency and minimizing environmental damage. The role of circular economy strategies, including recycling and waste valorisation, will also be examined as a means to improve the overall sustainability of critical minerals processing.
