The SITES X Annual Conference is set to explore the crucial economic perspectives and sustainable development challenges facing Africa and the Mediterranean region. Organized by the Italian Society of Development Economics in collaboration with the University of Rome Tor Vergata, this prestigious Conference will take place at Villa Mondragone in Monte Porzio Catone, Italy. The Conference aims to tackle the interconnected issues of trade, migration, and investment that link these regions, emphasizing the Mediterranean's role as a bridge between Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. The event will provide a platform for development economists to discuss the pressing challenges of sustainable development, including poverty, inequality, climate change, and environmental degradation, all of which are critical for achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Participants will engage with a diverse array of topics, including the economic development of Africa and the Mediterranean, social inclusion, gender gaps, international trade, and the economics of peace and conflicts. Special focus will be given to the energy transition and green economy, as both regions face significant vulnerabilities to climate change. Furthermore, the Conference encourages contributions that explore renewable energy potentials in Africa, particularly in solar, wind, and hydropower, and how Mediterranean countries can collaborate to develop sustainable energy infrastructure. The SITES X Annual Conference invites submissions of papers and complete session proposals, welcoming both empirical and theoretical contributions. Participants are encouraged to submit research focused on development issues, including education, human and social capital, health emergencies, and climate economics. The Conference will also feature awards such as the Fitoussi Medal, honoring a prominent development economist, and the Andrea Cornia Student Award for the best paper presented by a junior scholar. Participants will also have opportunities to connect with fellow researchers and professionals who share a commitment to fostering economic growth and reducing disparities between Africa and the Mediterranean, paving the way for mutual development and cooperation.
